Gateway tukee kahta protokollaa jotka toimivat J1708 yli:
- Standardi J1587 jota käyttää moni moottorivalmistaja
- oma Volvo Pentan käyttämä protokolla joka on käytössä EDC I sarjan koneissa kuten esim. KAD 44, KAD 300, TAMD 73..75 sekä myös EDC II sarjan koneet (esim. D12C-A MP)
J1708 yhteyttä käytettiin mittaristojen, elektronisten näyttöjen, diagnostiikkainstrumenttien ja muiden moottorimoduulien välillä. Tämä datamuoto oli hyvin suosittu kunnes 2005-2007 se alkoi nopeasti korvautua J1939 protokollalla.
Laite on varustettu naarasliittimellä joka sopii Volvo Penta EDC diagnostiikkaliittimeen jota käytetään EDC I ja EDC II sarjojen moottoreissa.
